The award-winning Tkaro bottle was developed to meet the growing need for an environmentally-responsible, beautifully designed and healthy alternative to plastic bottles and other, less convenient re-useable bottles. Tkaro uses glass and stainless steel in an innovative way to create a convenient, dishwasher-safe vessel for all your on-the-go beverage needs. The focus developing 'the glass you take with you' was on health, minimizing one’s environmental impact and on creating an object of beauty that can be sealed, reused and transported with ease. The result has been widely lauded and in 2010, Tkaro was awarded the prestigious reddot design award for product design in 2010. The reddot is the largest and most renowned design competition in the world.

The Founders

Co-Founder and C.E.O., Kai Fejér graduated from Cornell University’s famed Hotel School, spending two years following in Los Angeles, California working for commercial real estate investment brokerage firm Marcus and Millichap before relocating to Budapest, Hungary with architect husband Patrick. The two went on to build the Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace, Budapest, part of a small development team over the next six years. Relocating to Toronto, Kai joined Talisker Corp., a high end real estate development firm, in various marketing and leasing appointments.

Co-Founder and C.O.O., Taylor Russell joined Madrid-based AFA Press immediately following the completion of an Economics degree at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, an independent communications agency producing country-specific supplements to such international media as the International Herald Tribune, the New York Times and The Economist. In this role, Taylor presented, and successfully negotiated support and advertising dollars from such international Heads of State as Hugo Chavez, President of Venezuela; and Shaukat Aziz, Prime Minister of Pakistan among others.  Taylor recently completed her MBA at INSEAD.

Kai and Taylor are in fact sisters; the daughters of Bonnie Bickel, Founder of B.B. Bargoon’s, the widely acclaimed Canadian interior design chain for which she received numerous accolades, including recognition as one of Canada’s Top 100 Women Business Owners by Profit magazine.

The Name

Tkaro was literally derived from the Italian word ‘chiaro’ which means ‘clear’. Glass provides the pureness of form and material that is not possible in plastics or stainless steel.

‘T‘ for Taylor was added to ‘kiaro’ next to Kai’s ‘k’ and we removed the ‘i’ (which sounded too much like the Spanish phrase for I love you, ‘Te quiero’). The colon came about as a placeholder for the dropped ‘i’, for ease of reading and simply to add another layer to the name.

Tkaro’s home base, Toronto, was originally named Tkaronto, by the Mohawk Indians way back in the 1600s. Ironically, Tkaronto means ‘where there are trees standing in the water’, a wonderful nod to our green, eco-friendly bottle!
